Antioxidants and Health

Antioxidants are said to help us stay healthier for longer by strengthening our immune system and warding off illness. Our bodies use antioxidants to reduce the risk of cell damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals react with and cause damage to parts of our body’s cells, including our DNA, causing these cells to function poorly or die. This is also known as oxidative stress and is linked to the natural process of ageing and the development of several well-known diseases.
We can all improve our quota of antioxidants by eating a plentiful range of antioxidant-rich foods, packed with vitamins A, C and E, minerals and key nutrients including selenium, zinc, lycopene and beta-carotene.

The primary sources of antioxidants are plant-based foods, particularly fruits and vegetables. Experts recommend varying the range of fruit and vegetables you eat and aiming for a colourful rainbow on your plate to get the antioxidants you need. Think purple, orange, red, yellow and green – bright, vivid colours.
