Fibre, or roughage, is fruit, vegetables and grains that cannot be digested by your stomach. It is an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. Most of us in the UK consume only around half the recommended daily amount.

It can be difficult to get enough fibre in our daily diet so Hifibre is a convenient way of supporting daily fibre intake. It is a high-fibre blend of both insoluble and soluble fibre, both of which are essential for maintaining a healthy digestive system and bowel regularity. In a handy, easy-to-take capsule, it can be used as a long-term food supplement.

Fibre makes you feel fuller for longer so this supplement can be used alongside weight management plans.

Hifibre capsules include:

Psyllium husks – a seed of the plantago ovata plant and the main ingredient of Hifibre. Every 100g of psyllium provides 71g of soluble fibre; a similar amount of oat bran would contain only 5g of soluble fibre. Psyllium husks are a primary, highly respected source of both soluble and insoluble fibre. As psyllium husks pass through the body they turn into an expanding gel that assists in clearing waste through the intestines.

Flaxseed – a small seed from the flax plant, also known as linseed. Flaxseed contains both soluble and insoluble fibre and is packed with omega 3. The fibre content of flaxseeds, which includes mucilaginous fibre, helps to improve intestinal absorption of nutrients. Flaxseed is commonly used to support general digestive health.

Fenugreek – a plant cultivated worldwide as a semi-arid crop. Its seeds are very rich in minerals and also supply certain vitamins. Fenugreek is added because of its high soluble fibre content.

Apple pectin – a variety of pectin, which is a tissue found in all plant cell walls. The concentration of pectin varies among plants. Apples contain a rich amount of pectin. Apple pectin is high in soluble dietary fibre and so helps maintain digestive wellbeing. Apple pectin may also have a positive impact on friendly bacteria in the digestive tract.

Fennel seed powder – from fennel, a perennial, pleasant-smelling herb with yellow flowers. Native to the Mediterranean, it is now found throughout the world. Fennel seeds are antioxidant and contain a good amount of dietary fibre, which can help support the normal function of the digestive system. It is also said to help settle the stomach.

Rhubarb – full of important phytonutrients such as good levels of dietary fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. In Asia rhubarb is highly respected for digestive wellbeing.

Prune Juice  high in plant fibre and a natural sugar called sorbitol. Sorbitol is a mild, natural colonic stimulant that can help support the normal function of the bowel. Prunes also have chlorogenic acids that are said to assist a healthy digestive tract. For these reasons prunes have become popular as a bowel support food.

Figs high in soluble and insoluble fibre as well as minerals. Taken by many for digestive wellbeing and to support regular bowel function and reduce the risk of constipation.

Broccoli – a cruciferous vegetable now seen as one of the most respected health foods today. Broccoli provides a spectrum of health-giving benefits including being a rich source of insoluble an soluble fibre.

Carrot – despite being traditionally favoured for antioxidant benefits, carrots offer a significant amount of dietary fibre, which comes largely from the pectin in the plant wall cells.

Sugar beet fibre - has good levels of soluble fibre. It has been successfully assessed by the EFSA and is confirmed as effective for increasing faecal bulk.

If you need to increase your fibre intake, it’s important to do so gradually. A sudden increase may make you produce more wind.
