Vitamin D – Are You Getting Enough?

Public Health England (PHE), a government department, now advises taking vitamin D supplements in the winter months . These findings are based on advice from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN), which was asked to review the Department of Health’s evidence confirming that daily vitamin D supplements should now be considered by everyone in autumn and winter.

PHE says vitamin D is vital for bone and muscle health but people generally don’t get enough from sunlight during the darker months. Modern lifestyles and gloomy weather have led to deficiencies.

According to Dr Louis Levy, head of nutrition science at Public Health England, ‘A healthy, balanced diet and short bursts of sunshine will mean most people get all the vitamin D they need in spring and summer. However, everyone will need to consider taking a vitamin D supplement in the autumn and winter.’
